It’s said that salt can help detoxify the body, draw out toxins, and even improve circulation, but does it really work? To find out, I decided to try this unusual practice for myself.

Here’s my experience walking with salt in my socks for 40 minutes before bed, and whether or not I believe the ritual has any real benefits.


The Ritual: What You Need to Know

The ritual involves placing salt—usually Epsom salt or Himalayan pink salt—into your socks before bed and walking around for about 30-40 minutes. While it’s not completely clear why this works, proponents of the practice believe that the salt draws out toxins from your body, helps reduce inflammation, and promotes relaxation before sleep.

Here’s a quick overview of the process:

  • Step 1: Fill your socks with a small amount of salt (you don’t need much—around a tablespoon or so per sock).
  • Step 2: Put on your socks and walk around for about 40 minutes or until you’re ready to go to bed.
  • Step 3: After the time is up, remove the socks and go to sleep.

That’s it—simple, right? But does it live up to the hype?


The Materials: What I Used

  • Salt: I used Himalayan pink salt because it’s widely regarded for its mineral content and natural detoxifying properties. Some people opt for Epsom salt because of its magnesium content, which is said to help relax muscles, but I chose Himalayan salt based on the idea that it might have a broader range of minerals to draw from.
  • Socks: I used regular cotton socks. Nothing fancy—just something comfortable for walking around the house.

My Experience

1. Setting Up

At first, I wasn’t sure how much salt to use. I’d read online that a tablespoon per sock was the standard, so I went with that. I scattered the salt inside the socks and slipped them on, feeling the grains against my skin. It felt a little odd at first, but nothing too uncomfortable.

2. Walking Around

As I walked around the house with salt-filled socks, I quickly noticed a couple of things. First, the salt in the socks was mildly stimulating on the skin, almost like a gentle exfoliant. It wasn’t unpleasant, but I could feel the grains moving as I walked. Secondly, there was a sense of warmth in my feet, which I later learned is attributed to the salt’s supposed ability to increase blood circulation.

While walking around, I didn’t feel any dramatic changes immediately, but I did feel more aware of the sensation in my feet. I continued walking for about 40 minutes, just enough time to unwind from my day.

3. Removing the Socks

Once I removed the socks after 40 minutes, I was surprised to find that they felt noticeably damp, even though I hadn’t been sweating. It was as if the salt had absorbed moisture from my feet or the air around me. This could be due to the salt’s hygroscopic properties, meaning it draws moisture from its environment. It felt like a subtle cleansing effect.


The Results: Did I Feel Any Different?

After completing the ritual, I headed straight to bed. Here’s what I noticed:

Improved Relaxation:

I had read that the salt might help with relaxation, and I must admit, I felt a mild sense of calmness and relief in my legs and feet. It wasn’t dramatic, but my feet felt lighter, and I felt more at ease. Perhaps it was the result of simply unwinding during the ritual, or perhaps there is some truth to the claims that salt can help with muscle tension.
