Did not know this

Even now, trumpet worm nests provoke something in us. A strange blend of nostalgia and discomfort. Maybe you were the kid who poked it with a stick. Maybe you ran away. Either way, that moment is likely burned into your memory.

Here’s why:
These nests were often the first time many of us realized nature doesn’t exist for us—it just is. We weren’t used to seeing animals build tiny homes that looked like alien architecture. The nests showed us that nature could be complex, clever, and even unsettling.

Identifying them today is a quiet thrill. Look for rough, beige-to-brown tubes sticking out of sand or stone, with small openings barely visible to the eye. Resist the urge to touch them—they’re delicate and vital. Observing instead of disturbing teaches us something that echoes far beyond childhood: reverence.

For those with rough childhoods, these nests may have stood out for a different reason. They were constant. Amid instability, they remained. Mysterious, yes—but also symbolic of resilience and adaptation. Just like the kids who found them.

So what do trumpet worm nests really teach us?
That nature remembers. That the smallest creatures build the strongest shelters. That sometimes, what scared us as kids helps us see the world more deeply as adults.

👉 Ever find one as a kid? You’re not alone. Share this with someone who might remember too.
