In an aesthetic frame, when we think of holes, they certainly help add nice elements to the front porch. You could also think of functional architecture as being beautified. Still, you could characterize an opening as more functional. Or maybe the openings are links to light and shadow, which in turn can create a third dimension to a facade. They add some depth or character and certainly add a fair bit of interest to the overall detail of the home.
In some instances, openings can be remnants left behind from yesteryear; they often tell stories about a time when a dweller’s need operated much differently than today. Why is it we can take an opening in the wall of a covered area of the dwelling and become more like architectural archaeologist – excavators of character-makers of a home.
The hole in the brick on the wall of your front porch is not just a hole in a wall, it is intentional architecture of your home. Its purpose includes functional, drainage, ventilation and or aesthetic and comfort purposes. The city itself is laden with a treasure of architectural detail. When we think of craftsmanship, we should take time to appreciate there is a story behind every brick and mortar. Think of the story as a connection between the historic and character of our home. It is a story that gives legacy to future generations.
