The Secret to Growing Amaryllis and Enjoying Flowers All Year Round

If you’ve ever seen an amaryllis in full bloom, you know how stunning it can be. Towering stems, trumpet-shaped flowers in bold reds, whites, pinks, and even stripes—it’s like having a piece of the tropics right in your living room. But what if we told you there’s a secret to making this beauty bloom not just once, but year-round?

Whether you’re a seasoned plant lover or a beginner with a sunny windowsill, this guide will walk you through exactly how to grow amaryllis and keep it flowering again and again.

🌱 Step 1: Choose a Healthy Bulb

It all starts with the bulb. A strong, plump bulb means a strong plant. When buying amaryllis:

  • Pick bulbs larger than 2 inches in diameter.
  • Make sure they’re firm, not mushy.
  • Look for bulbs with a pointed tip—a sign it’s ready to grow.

Bonus: The bigger the bulb, the more flower stalks it can produce!

🪴 Step 2: Pot It the Right Way

Amaryllis likes to be snug in its pot. Here’s how to do it right:

  • Use a pot that’s 1–2 inches wider than the bulb.
  • Make sure the pot has drainage holes.
  • Use well-draining soil (a mix for bulbs or regular potting soil with added sand or perlite).

🌟 Important: Leave 1/3 of the bulb exposed above the soil surface. This helps prevent rot.

☀️ Step 3: Provide Bright Light and Warmth

Place your newly planted bulb in a bright, sunny spot—a south or west-facing window is perfect.

  • Ideal temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C).
  • Rotate the pot every few days so the stem grows straight.

In just a couple of weeks, you’ll start to see green shoots pushing through the top.

💧 Step 4: Water Smart, Not Too Much

Water sparingly at first—you don’t want to rot the bulb. Once growth starts:

  • Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy.
  • Water from the side, not directly on top of the bulb.

Once the flower stalks appear, you can increase watering slightly. When blooming, your amaryllis will need more frequent drinks.
