This Attic Find Creeped Me Out

I will be honest. Had I found a weird object hanging in the attic and covered in insulation; I would have assumed the worst. Not “we are going to lose our minds” (as seen in haunted houses). But definitely “I am never touching that again” worst. Imagine discovering something unexpected like an attic Christmas chandelier up there—it would make the moment even stranger.

This is the reason I loved this story so much.

First, this attic Christmas Chandelier looked as though it was just a bunch of wires, a lot of fluffy things (fluff), some tinsel and various ornaments. And because we always find a way to view everything as being slightly spooky in attics; a box could look scary. A coat could look as if it has a ghost inside. Even a handmade decoration can look as if one needs to step back from it very slowly.

But then came the memories.

It wasn’t some type of bizarre attic contraption at all. This was a handmade Christmas Chandelier for the attic made from wire clothes hangers. The flat parts were connected via wiring, and the hooks were pointing outwards from the connections. Various ornaments were attached to these hooks. In the middle of the entire thing, was angel hair. And after connecting everything and attaching a hook to hang it from the ceiling; this entire unit was decorated for Christmas.

To me, I think that is absolutely wonderful.

An Attic Handmade Christmas Decoration with Character

You see this is essentially how people created their own holiday decorations using anything available in the home. Wire clothes hanger(s) – old ornament(s) – a little glitter and sparkles and time. This was it!

No one worried about whether or not it looked bought at a store. That’s not the issue here. The issue here was creating a festive atmosphere.

This is why I consider this attic Christmas Chandelier to have such great nostalgia. It didn’t have to be perfect. It had to be personal. Someone had to create it manually piece-by-piece while determining where each ornament would go and whether or not it required just a little additional shine.

The addition of the angel hair also adds to my appreciation. If you recall this item you already know. The angel hair provided those frosted, glowing appearances on decorations that added to making everything seem a little more magical.

Why Does It Matter?

What I appreciate most about this attic Christmas Chandelier is that it provides a story. This is not simply an old decoration. It is an old memory that hangs there in plain view.

These are the types of stories that so many of us associated with old holiday decorations. They weren’t perfectly made, they weren’t expensive. They were merely creative, handmade and a reflection of the person who created them.

In an instant it appeared to be nothing but trash in the attic. The next moment it became part of your family history.

Not bad for a couple of wire clothes hangers, some ornaments and a small amount of angel hair.
