Natural ways to remove tartar and do teeth whitening at home

Maintaining a bright, healthy smile doesn’t always require expensive dental treatments. With consistent care and natural remedies, you can reduce tartar buildup and gently whiten your teeth at home. However, keep in mind that nothing replaces professional dental cleaning, especially if tartar is already hardened. Still, these natural methods can help prevent tartar, remove surface stains, and enhance the brightness of your smile.


🦷 1. Brushing with Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

Baking soda is mildly abrasive and helps scrub away plaque before it hardens into tartar. It also neutralizes acids in the mouth, reducing bacteria growth.

How to use:

  • Mix ½ teaspoon baking soda with a few drops of water to make a paste.

  • Brush your teeth with it for 2 minutes.

  • Use 2–3 times per week only (too much can weaken enamel).


🌱 2. Oil Pulling (Coconut or Sesame Oil)

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic method that helps reduce plaque, bacteria, and stains. Coconut oil also contains lauric acid, known for its antibacterial properties.

How to use:

  • Take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth.

  • Swish for 10–15 minutes (do not swallow).

  • Spit it out and rinse with warm water.

  • Do this daily for best results.


🍋 3. Lemon or Orange Peel Rub

Citrus peels contain compounds that fight microorganisms and help whiten teeth naturally. But because they are acidic, you must rinse afterward to protect enamel.

How to use:

  • Rub the inside (white side) of a fresh orange or lemon peel on your teeth for 2 minutes.

  • Rinse thoroughly with water.

  • Use only 2–3 times per week.


🌿 4. Aloe Vera & Glycerin Paste

Aloe vera has antimicrobial effects, and when combined with a little glycerin and baking soda, it can help reduce tartar naturally.

How to make:

  • Mix 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel,

  • 4 teaspoons glycerin,

  • 5 tablespoons baking soda, and

  • A few drops of lemon essential oil.

  • Use this mixture to brush teeth occasionally.


🍏 5. Crunchy Fruits & Vegetables (Natural Scrub)

Apples, carrots, and celery act like natural toothbrushes. Their fibrous texture scrapes away plaque, while chewing increases saliva production, which protects enamel.

Tip: Eat one crunchy fruit or veggie daily as a natural cleanser.
